In the Viking Age, Scandinavians extensively used linen for their serks (underdresses) and tunics, mainly in natural (ecru) or bleached (white) shades. However, excavations at the Birka site have revealed linen in vibrant hues, including red found in graves 762 & 757, and blue in grave 60A.
Historically, woman of every class across medieval and renaissance Europe would have worn an undergarment under their dress.
