Vladimir the Great - Kievan Rus 980 – 1015 Coin

Vladimir the Great was prince of Novgorod 969–977, grand Prince of Kiev 980–1015, and ruler of Kievan Rus from 980 to 1015. Vladimir is known for leading a Varangian army and reconquered Novgorod in 980 and consolidating the provinces of Kiev and Novgorod into a single state.  

The Byzantium emperor Basil II (976 – 1025) requested military assistance from Vladimir, who married Basil’s sister Anne in exchange. This style of coin was minted between 980 and 1015 and was heavily influenced by the iconography of Byzantine miliaresia coinage.

The face of the coin shows a Vladimir crowned and seated in the Byzantine style, holding a sceptre and the reverse of the coin shows a trident which was possibly a stylised falcon symbolising the holy trinity. The trident symbol was later adopted as the state coat of arms of Ukraine.

These reproduction coins are hand stamped by a passionate reenactor who performs historical coin minting demonstrations. As each coin is hand stamped small variations may exist adding to the hand made character of the coins.

Each coin measures 27mm in diameter.
