Richard the lll Gold Angel 1483 - 1485

Richard Ill's (House of York and the last of the Plantagenet dynasty) coinage began in 1483 with the death of his brother Edward IV and only lasted just over two years with his own death on the battlefield of Bosworth field in 1485.

The gold angel was a type of Medieval English gold coin originally based on the French angelot or ange. The angel was introduced in 1465 by King Edward IV and after Richard lll’s death continued to be minted by the Tudor and Stewart dynasty until 1642.

The name of the coin is taken from its depiction of the archangel Michael slaying a dragon on the obverse. The reverse portrays a ship on the waves, with a shield and crucifix above it. The surrounding Latin script reads “By thy cross save us Christ our Redeemer).

These coins are hand stamped by a passionate reenactor who performs historical coin minting demonstrations. As each coin is hand stamped small variations may exist adding to the hand made character of the coins.
