Haitabu Viking Baggy Trousers

These loose-cut trousers are based on early medieval finds and depictions from sites such as Hedeby (Haithabu), where fragments and artwork suggest the use of generously cut legwear gathered at the waist and lower leg.  

The cut is intentionally full through the upper leg, with the trouser segment on the lower leg being held in place with leg wraps (winingas). When worn this way, the trousers take on a distinctive, full above the knee, tapering below. Without leg wraps, the trousers can sag lower, so they are best paired with wraps for both function and historical appearance. The image with the measurement chart shows what they look like without winingas, but they are worn in all other images.

Made from a durable 80% wool and 20% nylon blend, the fabric offers the warmth and breathability of wool with added strength for regular use.  

Historically, wool was the most common fabric for trousers. Not only was wool readily available, it has many properties making it ideal for clothing even today:

• The fibres of wool trap air, making it a natural insulator, helping you to stay warm.
• It’s breathable, which means it keeps you warm without overheating
• Wool is warm, even when wet and can shed water, making it a good choice to wear during rain.
• While not waterproof, wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water before it feels wet, which keeps you dry for longer in rain.
• It’s a durable fabric.
• Wool is naturally flame-resistant, and safer to wear than polyester during living history or historical events featuring campfires for warmth and cooking.

The waistband is adjustable with a drawstring, allowing the trousers to sit securely at the waist while accommodating layering underneath.  

Suitable for reenactment, LARP, SCA or general early medieval or Viking kit, these trousers are a practical foundation garment.

Note: For an accurate fit and silhouette, these trousers should be worn with leg wraps (sold separately).

Care Instructions:

Washing: Hand wash or machine wash gently with wool detergent.

Drying: Lay flat to dry.

Ironing: Steam on low, avoid direct heat.

Spot Cleaning: Dab with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
