These ankle boots are based on archaeological finds from the Viking settlement of Jorvik located in York in Northern England. similar shoes have been found in several other sites around Europe estimated to date from the 9th to 10 centuries. Evidence exists for the use of this shoe both before and after this archaeological find making it suitable for Viking, Anglo-Saxon, Norman and early Medieval personas and dark ages clothing.
Prior to the 12th century shoes commonly fastened with either toggles or leather ties. This boot fastens with two rolled leather toggles which can be replaced by either bone, horn or wooden toggles to customise your shoes which are available separately.
The original artefact is a turn shoe. However, to add extra durability and comfort for the wearer this reproduction features a 5mm thick sole. Each of these shoes is made of 7.5oz (3mm) quality leather which is supple and soft.
This shoe was designed by us based on feedback we received from reenactors and is considerably higher quality than other mass made shoes currently on the market.
Leather will absorb moisture from the ground and sweat so it is important to make sure the shoes are dry after use. Residual moisture will increase the chance of the shoes going moldy or the nails rusting.
Perfect for re-enactment, LARP, historical costuming and SCA.
