This shirt is a reproduction of an extant garment and is suitable for Scandinavian (Viking) personas.
The original garment was found during excavations at Viborg Søndersø. The shirt has been dated to the 11th century. Our reproduction is inspired by the cut of the original, which is quite unique. It features a small square panel on the front and back, piecing on the body pieces and sleeves, a asymmetrical neck-slit and side slits to aid movement.
Our reproduction is machine sewn and machine finished. The hem, neckline and cuffs are finished with a double fold hem. The neckline has a slit which has a self-fabric facing, and two self-fabric ties. The inside seams are overlocked. All stitching has been done on the machine and there are visible machine stitches where the seams and hems have been topstitched.
Historically, men of every class across medieval and renaissance Europe would have worn a shirt underneath their clothing. Linen was a popular choice, and was slowly replaced with cotton when cotton became more readily available in Europe after the Renaissance. Linen was comfortable to wear on the skin, easy to wash and protected the outer-garments from the body’s sweat and oils.
This shirt’s shape and style makes it a very versatile part of your wardrobe and is suitable for a variety of uses, such as reenactment, LARP, SCA, historical or fantasy costumes. The side slits, underarm gussets and tapered sleeves mean it's easy to move in. It can be worn on its own or used as a garment underneath another tunic, coat or gown.
It is made of natural colour (not white)100% linen
