This drinking horn features a carved valknut symbol.

This drinking horn brass end is based on an artefact held by the Stavanger museum (Arkeologisk museum, Universitetet i Stavanger) in Norway.

The original drinking horn end or terminal is set with precious stones and is estimated to be from the late Viking era and is believed to be a bird possibly an eagle or raven.

In addition to the reproduction end the horn also has a decorative brass trim around the mouth.

The valknut is a pagan trefoil knot or triquetra symbol consisting of three interlocked triangles.

The symbol has been found on a variety of objects associated with Viking age German history.

Archaeologically, the symbol appears on several runestones and also on grave goods and ship burials found between Sweden, Norway and England.

Some notable artefacts include:

  • The Anglo Saxon Nene River gold Ring (8th to 9th centuries) currently on display in the British Museum (item number 1855,1115.1).
  • The sacrificial scene on Hammars stone in Gotland.

The symbol is believed to be associated with the god Odin, death and Valhalla. In most depictions of the symbol a representation of Odin or the animals that represent him being the horse or the wolf are present. Odin and his servants the Valkyries carry spirts of the dead to the underworld and Valhalla and back to the living for the Wild Hunt.

It has been proposed that the symbol is a magical talisman associated with the transition from life to death and resurrection. The knot without a beginning or end symbolising the power over life and death and the three linked triangles symbolic of the three realms of heaven, earth, and hell.

The Valknut is still used today by Germanic focused Wiccans and Neopagans faiths.

Made from real cow horn all horns are water proof, smoothly polished and finished with a water proof food safe epoxy.

Measured along the outside of the horn, the lengths range from 30.5cm – 38.1cm (12"-15")

The horn shown is an example, of the style of horn. Due to both the natural variations in horns and the handmade quality, each horn is unique in its curvature and colour tone and maybe a mixture of yellow, brown, white, cream, black and clear in colour.

This drinking horn is made by Lord of Battles who are an official supplier of the Game of Thrones and The Last Kingdom TV series and crafted the drinking horns, cups and tankards shown in these series.

Horn stands shown in photos not included and available separately.
