The St. Birgitta’s Cap was a practical and essential part of women’s headwear throughout the medieval period. Worn next to the skin, it served as a base layer for veils, wimples, or other head coverings while helping to secure them in place. The cap also kept hair neat and clean, offering both practical benefits and a modest appearance.

It is tied at the nape of the neck for a secure and adjustable fit. Whether worn alone or layered beneath more elaborate headpieces, this cap is a must-have for historical authenticity.
Linen was the most common fabric for caps, valued for its breathability, comfort, and ability to withstand frequent washing. Natural or bleached linen was a popular choice for everyday wear, while finer caps could include decorative stitching or delicate trims for wealthier individuals.
