The St. Birgitta’s Cap was a practical and essential part of women’s headwear throughout the medieval period. Worn next to the skin, it served as a base layer for veils, wimples, or other head coverings while helping to secure them in place. The cap also kept hair neat and clean, offering both practical benefits and a modest appearance.

The St. Birgitta’s Cap is thought to reflect headwear styles seen from the 14th to early 15th centuries, commonly worn by women of various social classes. It is tied at the nape of the neck for a secure and adjustable fit. Whether worn alone or layered beneath more elaborate headpieces, this cap is a must-have for historical authenticity.

Linen was the most common fabric for caps, valued for its breathability, comfort, and ability to withstand frequent washing. Natural or bleached linen was a popular choice for everyday wear, while finer caps could include decorative stitching or delicate trims for wealthier individuals.

This reproduction is a simple design, making it appropriate for a wide range of classes and personas. It consists of a simple two piece coif sewn onto a band which forms the brim and ties. The cap is gathered near the back. The back edge seam of the cap is sewn and the seam allowance flat felled. It is made of natural colour cotton/linen blend (87% cotton, 13% linen)

Machine wash at 40C. Warm iron. Do not bleach or tumble dry. This cap is simple, timeless, and versatile, making it perfect for reenactments, historical fairs, or adding a layer of medieval authenticity to your wardrobe.
