Evidence of the use of spurs begins in the 4th century BC and is well documented during the Roman period.  The prick spur was the first type of spur to be invented, and it consists of a prick rounded or  pointed.

Prick spurs were the main type of spurs used in the Middle Ages until the mid-14th century, when they were supplanted by rowel spurs. Rowel spurs first appear in artwork during the first half of the thirteen century before they became more popular.

During the 14th century spurs became more elaborate with additional spur points and crests. In the early 15th century spurs with longer necks developed with changes in Gothic fashion which extended as much as possible to elegant lengths and peaks as seen on the long toes of shoes and the sabatons of armour. Long spurs continued to be widespread use in Europe until the 16th century and were still worn by the Polish heavy cavalry until as late as the 17th century.

A knight’s status was closely related to his horse and spurs became one of the symbols of chivalry.
