Medieval Linen Shirt

This shirt is appropriate for most medieval periods, from the dark ages through the middle ages to the early renaissance. 

Historically, men of every class across medieval and renaissance Europe would have worn a shirt underneath their clothing. Linen was a popular choice, and was slowly replaced with cotton when cotton became more readily available in Europe after the Renaissance. Linen was comfortable to wear on the skin, easy to wash and protected the outer-garments from the body’s sweat and oils. 

Drawing from history, this shirt is made with a classic rectangle and gusset construction.  

The shirt body is cut from a trapezoid which widens at the bottom, creating a gentle “A” shape silhouette. This provides enough space around the hips to allow freedom of movement. The sleeved are also tapered and have a square gusset in the underarm. This is a common method of tailoring found on medieval shirts and tunics. It allows the arm plenty of movement at the shoulder, while the taper reduces the bulk along the length of the sleeve, making in comfortable to wear underneath another garment. 

Its shape and style makes it a very versatile part of your wardrobe and is suitable for a variety of uses, such as reenactment, LARP, SCA, historical or fantasy costumes. 

The hem, neckline and cuffs are finished with a double fold hem. The neckline has a slit which has a self-fabric facing, and two self-fabric ties. The inside seams are overlocked. All stitching has been done on the machine.

It is made of natural colour cotton/linen blend (87% cotton, 13% linen)

Care instructions: Machine wash at 40C. Warm iron. Do not bleach or tumble dry.
