Sleeveless pourpoints, also known as arming vests or arming jacks, are found in the late 15th century. They served as a garment to which the wearer could attach their armour, without adding the extra bulk of sleeves. Clothing in the 15th century consisted of multiple layers, and reducing the bulk of the sleeves helped increase comfort and arm movement.
Modernly, the garment has been embraced as an alternative for a doublet, which is more suitable for warm weather. Our reproduction is designed with this in mind. It’s a fitted, fashionable garment and includes seven sets of eyelets around the waist and two points for attaching hose. It is closed in the front with ties and lacing, and the four lacing ties are also included. Worn over a shirt it makes a comfortable garment for camp chores, and for better dress you can wear an over garment, such as a coat, houpeland or gown over the top.
This pourpoint is made from 100% recycled blue wool, and lined in 100% blue cotton.
PLEASE NOTE: Images show this pourpoint in blue linen and the video shows it in natural linen. This listing is for a blue wool pourpoint, and the colour is darker than that of the pictures.
Historically, wool was the most common fabric for garments such as cotehardies, doublets and tunics. Not only was wool readily available, it has many properties making it ideal for clothing even today:
The fibres of wool trap air, making it a natural insulator, helping you to stay warm.
It’s breathable, which means it keeps your warm without overheating
Wool is warm, even when wet and can shed water, making it a good choice to wear during rain.
While not waterproof, wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water before it feels wet, which keeps you dry for longer in rain.
It’d a durable fabric.
Wool is naturally flame-resistant, and safer to wear than polyester during living history or historical events featuring campfires for warmth and cooking.
Care Instructions:
Washing:Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent to preserve the wool’s texture.
Drying: Lay flat to air dry, keeping the garment out of direct sunlight to maintain fabric color and strength.
Ironing: Iron on a low-medium heat setting if necessary, or use steam to smooth out wrinkles.
Spot Cleaning:Use a damp cloth with mild detergent for small stains, avoiding any harsh scrubbing.
