The Knights Hospitaller or Knights of St John cross originated from the Italian city of Amalfi during the 11th century and adopted by the Knights Hospitaller in the early 12th century. Used during the crusades the cross was a symbol of the eight obligations of the Christain warrior. In 1530 The Knights Hospitaller was given rule over the Island of Malta and the (Maltese) cross has been associated with Malta ever since and remains the symbol of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
The eight points of the cross symbolise the obligations of the knights to love justice, be merciful, be sincere and wholehearted, to endure persecution, repent one’s sins, give proof of humility and to live in truth and have faith.
