Charles de Blois 14th Century Wool Cotehardie

$229.95 AUD
Availability: 1 in stock

his cotehardie is inspired by an extant 14th century garment, generally referred to as the “Charles de Blois pourpoint.” The pourpoint of Charles de Blois is currently held in the Musee des Tissus et des Arts Decoratif in Lyon, France. It is one of the most well-preserved surviving garments of the 14th century.

The extant item was an arming garment, made of layers of fabric, quilted together. It had 70 buttons which fastened the front, and each sleeve. The sleeves were made of multiple pieces, including special tailoring around the shoulder and armhole, known as “grande assiette” sleeves, which allowed the wearer to move their arms freely and easily.

This reproduction is designed as a fashion garment for 14th century reenactors, or others who wish to replicate a 14th century persona. It is not quilted, but is fully lined. The outer fabric is 100% recycled wool in a deep red colour, and the lining is 100% cotton canvas. The sleeves are cut in the “grande assiette” style, making it comfortable to wear and offering free movement. The sleeves do not have buttons. The garment closes up the front with self-fabric buttons, which were popular throughout the middle ages, and the close spacing of the buttons is seen not only on the extant inspiration garment, but also in countless medieval artworks.

Historically, wool was the most common fabric for garments such as cotehardies, doublets and tunics. Not only was wool readily available, it has many properties making it ideal for clothing even today:

  • The fibres of wool trap air, making it a natural insulator, helping you to stay warm.
  • It’s breathable, which means it keeps you warm without overheating
Wool is warm, even when wet and can shed water, making it a good choice to wear during rain.
  • While not waterproof, wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water before it feels wet, which keeps you dry for longer in rain.
  • It’s a durable fabric.
  • Wool is naturally flame-resistant, and safer to wear than polyester during living history or historical events featuring campfires for warmth and cooking.

Care Instructions:

Washing:Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent to preserve the wool’s texture.

Drying: Lay flat to air dry, keeping the garment out of direct sunlight to maintain fabric color and strength.

Ironing: Iron on a low-medium heat setting if necessary, or use steam to smooth out wrinkles.

Spot Cleaning:Use a damp cloth with mild detergent for small stains, avoiding any harsh scrubbing.

The "Charles de Blois" Pourpoint combines historical accuracy, comfort, and eco-conscious materials, making it a perfect addition to your medieval wardrobe for reenactments, LARP, or living history events.
