This bell tent follows a form that appears in medieval artwork, where simple conical tents are shown in military and traveling contexts. While surviving examples are rare, these visual sources depict single-pole tents of this kind. They are practical, easy to transport, quick to set up, and suited to temporary camps.
Today, reenactors love this style of tent for similar reasons.
With a base diameter of approximately 3.7m and a recommended pole height of 2.35m (with the walls just off the ground), the tent provides enough space for two people along with basic kit.
This size makes it particularly well suited to reenactment events where space is limited, or for individuals who prefer a simpler, more manageable setup. It’s equally practical for LARP, SCA, or small medieval encampments where ease of transport and quick assembly are priorities.
The tent can be pitched by one person without much difficulty and packs down into a relatively compact bundle when not in use.
Made from heavy-duty 500 gsm cotton canvas, this tent is noticeably more robust than lighter modern equivalents. The natural ecru finish reflects the undyed appearance of traditional canvas. The sloped sides help shed water and wind, and the canvas has been treated with a waterproof treatment.
The tent is supplied as the tent canvas and carry bag only. A single centre pole is required but not included. The length of required pole is 2350mm. You will also require tent pegs or stakes, which are not included.
We also recommend a finial for the top that protects from rain entering through the hole at the top of the tent that sits on the pole spike. A ground sheet can be cut from a plastic tarp available from hardware stores to stop moisture from the ground.
Care Instructions
Allow the tent to dry fully before packing to prevent mildew.
Brush off dry dirt with a soft brush rather than washing where possible.
Spot clean with water and mild soap if required—avoid harsh detergents.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space in the provided canvas bag.
Reapply waterproofing treatment occasionally for extended outdoor use.
When pitching the tent, locate the door and ensure it's closed. Peg out the base of the tent, ensuring your entrance is facing your desired direction. Once the pent is pegged out, open the door, insert the spike of your pole through the hole. Lift the pole up to raise the tent.
If using a ground sheet, ensure this doesn't extend beyond the outer perimeter of the tent, as if it rains this will cause water to flow inside.
Product includes tent canvas and bag only. Pole, groundsheet, tent pegs, finial and other accessories are NOT included. You will need to purchase or make a 2350mm pole.
Tent is ecru cotton canvas. PLEASE NOTE: the tent is not mottled, this is shadows from the sun shining through trees.
