Viking Winingas – Wool Leg Wraps with Brass Raven Clasps

These wool leg wraps, often referred to as winingas, are based on garments worn across northern Europe in the early medieval period. Examples of leg bindings appear in both Viking and Anglo-Saxon contexts, where they served a practical purpose—helping secure loose trousers, adding warmth, and protecting the lower leg during travel over rough ground.

Worn spiralled from the ankle up to just below the knee, they create a close, supportive fit around the calf. This style can be seen in visual sources, as well as in textile fragments that show the use of durable twill weaves suited to repeated wrapping and movement.

These wraps are made from a sturdy 320 gsm wool blend (80% wool, 20% nylon), giving you the warmth and breathability of wool with added strength for regular use. The fabric is woven in a classic herringbone twill which provides both flexibility and resilience, allowing the wraps to conform comfortably to the leg without losing shape.

Each wrap measures approximately 302 cm in length and 10.5 cm in width, giving enough length to achieve a secure wrap on most leg sizes. They are fastened using solid brass hooks, styled with a raven motif, which are sewn to one end of each wrap.  

Supplied as a pair with two brass raven hooks, these winingas are suitable for reenactment, LARP, or as a practical addition to any early medieval or Viking kit.  

Care Instructions:

Washing: Hand wash or machine wash on a gentle wool cycle with cold water.

Drying:Lay flat to dry.

Ironing:Steam on low if needed.

Spot Cleaning: Dab gently with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
