Germanic Shield Boss Umbo Black - 16 Gauge

Make your own early Germanic or Celtic shield with this pointed shield boss. 

The boss is made from 16 gauge steel.

A shield boss of this style is currently held by the Met Museum New York from the late 4th century France (Accession Number: 17.192.141).  

Channel the strength of ancient warriors with this Germanic Shield Boss, forged from steel and finished in a blackened, battle–worn style. Featuring a conical dome and a hammered surface, it delivers both protection and authentic dark ages character.

This shield boss (also called an umbo) is designed to fit securely onto wooden shields, protecting the wielder’s hand while also reinforcing the shield for combat.

Installation Guide

Cut or drill a hand-grip hole in your wooden shield.

Place the boss over the opening.

Align and mark the 4 rivet holes.

Drill corresponding holes in the shield.

Secure using the included rivets and washers.

For full functionality, add a wooden or leather-wrapped grip.

Care Instructions

Wipe clean after use or handling.

Apply a thin coat of oil to prevent rust.

Store in a dry location.

Avoid prolonged moisture exposure.

Periodically check rivets if mounted on an active shield.
