Make your own Medieval experience and complete your late 14 to early 15th century armour harness with this bascinet helm forged from 16 gauge steel. The helm is oil blackened for extra corrosion resistance.

This style of helm is often called a Griffon helm and the face plate is a historical stylisation optimised for competitive medieval combat based on images of bascinet helmets from the late 14th century.

A similar helm can be seen in the Pinta Spoleto frescos located in Italy estimated to be from 1392 – 1416 (shown in second last photo below).  Another similar helm can be seen on the mural Museo de Navarra Spain and dated 1335 (shown in last photo below).

The helm can be worn with the visor removed or in the upright position.

The visor of the helmet can be easily removed and reattached using the metal pin attached on both sides of the helmet which is affixed to the helmet with a riveted mail chain transforming the helm into an open-faced sallet. This is a popular feature of this helm as it allows the wearer to wear the helmet as an open face bascinet before a combat reenactment or tournaments. Keeping the combatant cooler and more comfortable before a squire or attendant reattaches the face plate before the demonstration.

The helm also has a safety pin to keep the faceplate closed during combat.

The helmet also has a leather lining suspension which is securely riveted with chin strap that can be adjusted to better fit the wearer. The interior is blackened to improve corrosion resistance.

The helm has a circumference of 68cm which enables the wearer to also fit a suitable padded coif or cap.

For historical reenactment combat, we recommend 14 gauge steel thickness.
