A reproduction of a Viking coin (Quatrefoil type) minted in England by the Danish King Cnut between 1017 - 1023.

Cnut (Canute) conquered England in 1016 with an army of Vikings and soon after minted this coin in the former kingdom of Wessex.

Early Anglo Saxon coins did not have realistic portraits on their coins like those seen in modern times. Anglo Saxon coins tended to copy previous Roman designs from the third and early fifth centuries. Roman emperors were seen as powerful and Anglo Saxon kings wanted to emulate Roman coins and the style of portraits seen of emperors on these coins. After conquering England Cnut took over the Anglo-Saxon system of coinage and was the first king of England to introduce a more contemporary style of portrait on a coin.

These coins are hand stamped by a passionate reenactor who performs historical coin minting demonstrations. As each coin is hand stamped small variations may exist adding to the hand made character of the coins.

Each coin measures 20mm in diameter.

Made from high-quality pewter.
