This coin is a reproduction of a coin minted by the Viking King Anlaf Guthfrithson (also known as Olaf Guthfrithson) who was the king of Dublin between 934-941 and also York between 939-941.

Often called a raven penny these coins were minted between 939-941 during his occupation of York.

Anlaf Guthfrithson was a Norse-Gael Viking of the Uí Ímair family during the turbulent 10th century Viking Invasions in Ireland and England. Upon his fathers death in 934 he succeeded the kingship of Dublin (Ireland). He coordinated an attack on Northumbria with Constantine II of Scotland against the English ruler Æthelstan at the Battle of Brunanburh. After the death of Æthelstan, Anlaf established himself as king of York and Northumbria.

The raven image on a coin was a powerful statement of independence as it was the symbol used on Viking banners during warfare.

The face of the coin features an image of Odin’s raven and the text ANLAF CVNVNC which means “King Anlaf”. The reverse of the coin is similar to contemporary English coins with a cross pattée surrounded by text. The similarity in style is most likely a result of local coin moneyers in York surviving the conflict and making coins for the new Viking conqueror.

An extant copy of this coin is currently held by the British Museum and Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

These coins are hand-stamped by a passionate reenactor who performs historical coin minting demonstrations. As each coin is hand stamped small variations may exist adding to the hand made character of the coins.
