James IV Plack Scottish Reproduction Coin (1488 - 1513)

This coin is a reproduction of a 15th -16th century Scottish plack silver coin.

The original coin was minted by James IV (1473 – 1513) King of Scotland from the house of Stuart and minted at the Edinburgh mint.

A plack coin was a Scottish coin of the value of four Scots pennies

King James IV was the great grandfather of James 1st King of England. famous for being the last monarch in the British Isles to be killed in battle. He is also the last king of Scotland to have spoken Gaelic.

The face of the coin features a shield within a tressure of arches and a crown in each arch. On the shield is a Scottish lion rampant; around which is the latin script, IACOBVS DEI GRA REX SCOT. The reverse of the coin features an ornate cross with a saltire (St Andrew's Cross) in the centre and crown in each quarter of the cross surrounded by latin script VIL LA DE E DINBVRG

These coins are hand stamped by a passionate reenactor who performs historical coin minting demonstrations. As each coin is hand stamped small variations may exist adding to the hand made character of the coins.
