Rectangular double looped buckles were in use from as early as 13th century.  However, the number of buckles found during the Medieval period is fairly limited. Excavations suggest that this buckle type was most popular during the 16th and 17th centuries during the Stuart and Elizabethan era.  Smaller size rectangular buckles continued to be popular on shoes, bags, pouches and other accoutrements into the Napoleonic/Georgian and Victorian era.

This buckle measures 25.5mm x 31.5mm in size
