Medieval Monk's Hooded Robe with Rope Belt

This monk’s robe is based on the simple garments worn by religious orders throughout the medieval period, particularly from the 12th to 13th centuries. Monastic clothing was intentionally plain, reflecting ideals of humility and the rejection of wealth. Orders such as the Franciscans are well known for adopting undyed or minimally processed fabrics, often in wool or linen, closely resembling the everyday clothing of the rural poor.

This reproduction consists of a full robe with attached hood. Made from 100% cotton, this robe is more suited to warm weather and modern laundering than the traditional wool. The fabric hangs naturally, creating the characteristic vertical folds seen in period depictions. The cut is intentionally generous, designed to fit loosely over the body and allow for ease of movement.

The robe is a pullover style with a simple V-neck opening, secured with a small button at the neckline. The attached hood is cut full enough to sit properly when worn up or drape naturally when down.

A rope belt (cincture) is included, allowing the robe to be gathered at the waist. In historical contexts, such belts were both practical and symbolic. They were used to secure the garment and, in some orders, tied with knots representing religious vows.

Available in S/M, L/XL, and XXL/XXXL, the robe is designed for a loose fit across a range of body types, consistent with how these garments were originally worn.

Suitable for reenactment, LARP, theatre, or historical interpretation, this is a straightforward and practical representation of medieval monastic dress.
