Aethelred II, King of Wessex Anglo-Saxon Penny Coin (978 - 1016)

 This coin is a reproduction of a penny coin minted by the English Anglo-Saxon king Aethelred II (Æthelred), King of Wessex. This type of coin was minted in England between 978 and 1016.

The face of the coins features a depiction of Aethelred with helmet and armour. The reverse of the coin features a long cross.

Known as the Unready, from the old English meaning "ill or poorly advised" was a pun on his name, which meant "well advised".

During his reign Danish Viking raiding became more serious in England which led to Æthelred paying these raiders off with tribute payments to keep the peace (Danegold).

An original coin artefact can be viewed on the British museum website by searching for Museum number 1883,0516.1.

 These coins are hand stamped by a passionate Medieval reenactor who performs historical coin minting demonstrations. As each coin is hand stamped small variations may exist adding to the hand made character of the coins.

Made from high quality pewter.
