Cochineal Grape 8ply Wool Yarn
Naturally dyed wool adds authenticity to your historic crafts or charm and beauty to your modern crafting.
This wool was dyed here in Australia with Cochineal. Cochineal has been used for hundreds of years in central America and is still used today as a dye in traditional textiles, and also as a pigment in food colours and cosmetics. Cochineal from Central America didn’t begin to be traded to Europe until the 16th century, however, Europe did have a similar dye in the middle ages called Kermes. Kermes has always been extremely expensive due to it’s rarity and medieval reenactors often substitute cochineal to represent textiles dyed with Kermes.
